About Kids Mate
Kids Mate is a browser-based chat with Pip, an original friendly fox character. A small language model (Llama 3.2 1B via WebLLM) and speech recognition (Whisper) download once and run on your device — so conversations stay private and work offline after the first load. Turn on always-on listening and just talk, or type a message; Pip answers in text and speaks aloud. This is a prototype for family use with adult supervision, not a production children's product.
How to use Kids Mate
- Open Kids Mate in Chrome or Edge on a computer with WebGPU.
- Download the on-device models once (they are cached for later visits).
- Tap the mic to start always-on listening, then speak naturally — or type a message.
- Read Pip's reply and hear it spoken aloud — nothing is sent to a chat server.
Frequently asked questions
- Does my child's chat leave the computer?
- Chat generation runs locally in the browser with WebLLM. Model files are downloaded from the model's host on first use, then cached. There is no cloud chat API.
- Why is the first visit slow?
- The language model and speech model are large (hundreds of megabytes). After they download once, later visits use the browser cache.
- Which browser do I need?
- A recent Chrome or Edge build with WebGPU support works best. Safari and browsers without WebGPU are not supported yet.
- Can kids talk with their voice?
- Yes. Tap Start listening — the mic stays on and detects when they speak and when they pause. On-device Whisper transcribes, then Pip replies and speaks the answer. Listening pauses while Pip is talking so her voice is not re-captured.
- Is this safe for children?
- Pip uses a kid-oriented system prompt, but there is no full moderation pipeline. Treat this as a supervised prototype, not a substitute for parental judgment.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Kids Mate has no sign-in.
